Is it safe to travel to India without a tour guide? Best places to see in India?

It is safe to travel in India without a guide, but i would advise you to get one, espeically if you do not speak the language (hindi,tamil etc.) and do not know the roads. Your experience maybe much better with a tour group because they know the best places and the best ways to get there. I regret to say that you and your husband alone, may cost you your safety. People there will know you are tourists and ask you for money and things like that. Right now, the transportation system is quite bad there so when your car comes to a stop beggars come and knock on your windows asking for money. and if they see that you are a tourist (without an indian guide who knows how to get rid of them) they will persist until you give them money. (i advise you NOT too, it’s heartbreaking, but for the best, don’t give in =[ )

When my family and i went to india 2 years ago, we had a tour guide/driver, even though my parents are indian. They could speak the language but were unsure of the ways to get to (Agra, Jaipur etc) and could not drive there. Thats one more thing you MUST have, a driver, with a good car, make sure to ask them what kind and what condition their car is in, you want air condition- some cars there do not have an ac system. The public transportation is horrendous. you DO NOT want to take that. people are literally hanging off the sides of the bus, no joke. its not safe.
But the past two years india has changed a lot and many things have improved, just not the transportation system. so it is best to have a driver who knows the area well and is willing to take you whereever you would like

So bottom line is, take a tour (they know all the inside tips) or a tour guide/driver. and most of all Have a great trip!

oh yeah. the downside to this trip is that you may (probably) get sick. I got a fever and stuff there but tylenol did the trick. Don’t forget to bring a medicine kit with bandaids, tylenol, cough syrup and things of that nature. Oh and calmine lotion to put on misquito bites. Also DO NOT under ANY circumstance drink water or milk there. There’s 100% chance you’ll get sick, cause we’re not used to what’s in the water there so i advise you not to drink the water or milk there. just buy water bottles from the store (they are VERY cheap, its like 1 L for 50 cents (after the conversion) ) and if you order milk there, ask them for hot milk. (it’ll be boiled and any germs will die)
sounds kinda weird, but it’ll keep you safe. When i went, my grandmother and my mom had to boil everything before we drank it espeically the water, since it came straight from the tap ( we have a house there) . and after it boiled for sometime we just put it in the frigde so in a couple hours we would have CLEAN cold water.
