Is it safe to travel to Greece right now–May 2010?
My husband and I are traveling to Greece. We fly into Athens in late May 2010, then leave the next day for Santorini. We will spend time in Crete as well. I know the islands are probably fine, but I am concerned about landing in Athens–after the bank bombing. Is it safe? What spots should we stay away from there?
As a foreigner who has been in Greece during the past couple of months, I can say that I feel completely safe here.
Demonstrations don’t just happen spontaneously, they’re announced in the media days before. Just ask your cab driver when you come in to town if anything’s planned…
If by some coincidence, there is a demonstration or a worker’s strike the one day you’re in Athens, just don’t visit the parliament buildings. That’s “Syntagma” and “Syntagma Square”. That’s where the demonstrations are usually held. You’ll be fine everywhere else in the city.
