mediterranean cruise, ports where we don’t need to book excursions?

We are planning our first cruise, and are in the process of reviewing the itinerary. Of the schedule below, are any of these ports of call close to the city and would not require a booked excursion? If you’ve been these places via cruise ship, did you tour on your own or book the excursion?

I can help with a few – - –

Dubrovnik — Do NOT book a tour! The ship will run tenders in to shore at the Old City, and that is exactly what you want to see! It is small, and completely do-able on foot. There is a beautiful and very old church just inside the city wall — don’t miss it!

Corfu — Do NOT book a tour! The ship will probably run shuttle-buses between the dock and the historic/shopping/park area. The area is small, has exactly everything to see right there, and is lovely! Be sure to get a gelatto! And you will see that there is a smallish, very, very old Greek Orthodox church — well worth seeing! Go right inside, and you will be welcomed.

Naples — That is one of those places you can see from the ship but can’t get there without a tour or a rather expensive taxi. There are excellent excursions, and I really suggest you go on one — a city tour, a trip to Pompeii, or a boat to Capri.

Civitavecchia — I would urge you to take the ship’s shuttle bus into Rome! It is one hour from the dock to the center of Rome. When I was there last, I took the shuttle, which dropped us off at a central location, and we were on our own for the day, and then went back to the location to get the bus back to the ship. (It’s really important to WRITE DOWN or take some digital photos of the meeting place! You don’t want to get lost.) We then hopped all over Rome via taxis, which were very good and not very expensive. Or, you can take an all-day tour of Rome, or spend the day on a special “day at the Vatican”. This is one place you really, really should only go on ship-sponsored excursions!

Barcelona — This is another place you can see from the ship but not get there on foot, and a ship-sponsored city tour is very, very good. It will also almost definitely have “free time” in the city center for shopping, some gelatto, and poking around the new, still-in-progress cathedral. Barcelona is spread out enough so there is no single area you will want to spend all your time, and there is a lot of traffic, so do take a tour!

By the way, cruise companies always try to get people to sign up for shore excursions long before the cruise. Don’t do that! It isn’t necessary, and you will surely meet other passengers who are familiar with the various ports and will have some very good advice for you. There are always people who will advise you to book your own touring privately rather than through the ship, and you can indeed save some money that way. However, traffic can be a nightmare, and if you are off on your own and get back late, the ship will sail without you. If you are on a ship-sponsored excursion, you will not be left if the bus or van or whatever gets back late — the ship will wait for you! Also, the cruise companies only deal with local companies with good track records for safety, passenger satisfaction, good insurance, safe vehicles, and tour guides who do a good job. There is almost always a member of the ship’s crew on each vehicle, too, who can telephone the ship if necessary.

Be sure to carry Euros with you, since where you are going you will not be able to pay for anything with US dollars!
