What happens if I get caught for being underage drinking in NYC?
Hi guys, I’m italian, 20, and will be on holiday in your country next month. I’m not gonna break ur rules.. just looking for an info.. We don’t have things such a “minimum drinking age” in Italy: you can see 14 y/o drinking spirits, while wine if often drunk at eleven or twelve.
In America you must be 21 even for drinking a beer, which seems incredible to me but maybe I’m not used to..
I don’t want to criticize your law.
I’m just trying to undestand what happens if a tourist (20 y/o) gets caught in a pub or in a disco in New York drinking alcohol (maybe buyed by his friend 21). Pls tell me your experiences if u r sure about that. Is there a fine?

I have visited NYC three times in the past year. I am also 25 years old.
First, don’t worry about getting caught. The NYPD have much more important things to do than to bust a 20 year old tourist for underage drinking. Trust me, as long as you don’t act like a belligerent drunk and get the cops called on you, you will not get caught. There are over 8 million people living in NYC, and there are probably thousands of tourists visiting every day. The chance of you even seeing a police officer randomly walking down the street amongst the swarm of other pedestrians is slim.
Having said that, I am guessing you are planning to go to some bars. I would say about a quarter of the bars in Manhattan have a doorman/bouncer who asks for identification before letting you in. You will have to avoid those bars altogether, because they will not let you in if you are under 21.
Every other bar or club is fair game, since most bartenders usually do not ask for identification if the person looks close to being 21. If by chance the bartender does ask you for identification, just tell them you don’t have any and move on. It’s not a big deal to them, because they see it everyday.
Honestly, out of all the places in the United States, NYC is the least likely place you will be busted for underage drinking. The police are busy handling real crimes, not out to ruin the fun of a 20 year old tourist from Italy. Even if by some rare chance you were caught, it is very unlikely the police officer would arrest you.
For example, last time I was there, my friend and I bought a case of beer at about … um, one in the morning (I don’t remember exactly what time) from a convenience store. As we were walking out, a cop was walking in and smelled alcohol on us.
He asked, “You boys been drinking tonight?”
We replied, “A little bit.”
He replied back, “Drive safely!”
So as they say in New York: “Forget about it!”
