This usually has to be done through a company such as RailPlus who charge an administration fee on top of the reservation fee. If you want to use a Pass, try booking most of your trips from Europe as the reservation fee is only a few euros. The problem here is with long distance trains which are often heavily booked in advance.

An alternative, and you’ve got time to research this, is to buy point-to-point tickets through the various national rail companies on-line. The earlier you book the cheaper the tickets will be. The downside is that many cheap tickets cannot be cancelled or changed. NB: have just had a look at the cost of a 1st class couchette on the Paris to Munich train – it’s 215 euros! That Eurail Pass might just be worthwhile, even if you need to pay the extra admin fees. On overnight trains it’s safer to book either a couchette or sleeper.

Be aware that timetables change, so you’ll need to double check schedules next year. With most train companies you can only book tickets 90 days in advance, and that includes bookings through RailPlus.

You might want to fly from Rome to Santorini, it’s quite a lengthy trip by train.

AU$10,000 is more than enough money, especially since you’ll have the most expensive bits paid for in advance.
